This gallery talk will take a close look at Thomas Hart Benton's mural America Today and ask how artists across the United States mobilized the monumental aesthetics of modernism to produce images and stories of the nation in the 1930s. With a focus on the unique montage aesthetics of Benton’s mural, we'll explore the tension between the heroizing aesthetics of monumentalism and the grave economic, social, and political issues America faced throughout the Great Depression.
Free with Museum admission; registration is not required.
