Supporting Ukraine

A message from the President and the Director of The Met

Mar 25, 2022

Red-hued photograph of a beach, and dark clouds over a blazing orange-hued sunset in the horizon.

As we witness the outrageous and heartbreaking violence and loss of life in Ukraine, we write to express our support for our friends and colleagues who are suffering such terrible and incalculable loss. We are further saddened by reports that the Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol, Ukraine—dedicated to the 19th-century artist Arkhip Kuindzhi—was destroyed by Russian airstrikes, yet another devastating example of the utter disregard for the life and culture of the people of Ukraine. The Met denounces the horrific violence that is ravaging the region and we pledge to continue our support in every way possible to the people of Ukraine and to the long and difficult work of recovery.
