The Prince Imperial

Paul-Victor Lebas French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 556

The open countenance of Napoléon-Eugène-Louis (1856–1879), sole offspring of Napoleon III, helped freshen the image of the increasingly unpopular regime of the Second Empire. The cameo is close to but does not copy the marble statue by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux commissioned by the emperor in 1865 (Louvre, Paris).
