This manuscript copy of Mahmud 'Abd al‑Baqi’s Divan (collected works) contains poems extolling the pleasures and notable events of courtly life in later sixteenth-century Istanbul. This painting illustrates the arrival of the Safavid prince Haidar Mirza, sent to the Ottoman court as a hostage to fulfill the terms of a treaty between the Ottomans and the Safavids.
