Hichiriki

Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

The hichiriki, a member of the double-reed family, is a main melodic instrument in imperial court music and dance. Unlike most wind instruments, whose bore widens toward the open end, the hichiriki features an unusual reverse conical bore that narrows at the lower end and contributes to its unique sound. The form of this hichiriki’s case reflects the importance of the fan in Japanese culture.
