Drop pendant
Predynastic, Naqada l–Early Naqada II
Discovered in the grave of a child, this pendant, along with a second similar but smaller example (09.182.2b), is carved from elephant ivory, a luxury material that would have been imported from the far south. With this burial were also vessels, baskets, clay and carnelian beads, three small copper tools, and fragments of a clay figurine (see 09.182.1-8). The quantity and variety of these objects indicate that this child was born into a wealthy, powerful family.
