A native of Mérida (Yucatán) in Mexico’s south, Gahona—who signed his prints with the pseudonym Picheta—is a key figure in the development of satire in Mexico. While traveling in Europe during his late teenage years, he became familiar with satirical prints by artists such as Honoré Daumier and Gustave Doré. After returning to Mérida in 1847, Picheta founded the periodical Don Bullebulle ; its subtitle, "periodical of burlesque and follies, issued by an unruly society," suggests the publication's content and tone.
