Pink Roses
Charles Ethan Porter American

Porter, the only late 19th-century African American artist to focus on the still-life genre, is best known for his floral imagery, particularly impressionistically painted roses. The feathery handling of paint, blond tonalities, and formal composition of the picture suggest Porter’s awareness of Henri Fantin-Latour, whose work he came to admire during his 1881-83 studies in Paris.
