From the late nineteenth century public health was a pressing concern in Mexico. Measures were taken to communicate principles of health to a culturally and socially heterogenous population. The Department of Public Health, created in 1920, initially focused on combating three "social diseases," syphilis, tuberculosis, and alcoholism. This poster employs racist and ableist stereotypes to issue a dire warning about the perils of alcoholism and its effect on children. Three young people (two Black and one Chinese) are pictured, each with a caption describing their actual age, the effects of their parents’ drinking, and, as a result, their reduced mental age. The poster reflects a broader social symbolism as well: the healthy child became a sign of a healthy nation, its potential, and its progress.
