Kim Yik-yung 김익영 金益寧 Korean
Not on view
Contemporary ceramic art is a vibrant and dynamic part of the Korean art world. Artists like Kim Yik-yung have been important links to past traditions not only by preserving and passing on technical knowledge and skill, but also by incorporating elements found on historical ceramics. In addition to its angular shape, material, and color, the ridged flanges on the sides of this vessel are a nod to Joseon ritual vessels. Just as Joseon vessels often retain the marks of being thrown on a wheel, Kim’s dimpled and faceted body reflect its slab-built construction.
