Known as a muralist, Orozco also made lithographs and produced this Harlem subject during his residence in the United States from 1927 to 1934. From the back of a theater, we look at a brightly lit stage filled with leaping acrobats. Simplified, repeated shapes suggest a sold-out house, as do two men standing at the rear. Harlem drew diverse audiences to a range of dramatic entertainments at this time, and although vaudeville was in decline, it could still attract crowds. The Weyhe Gallery, known for promoting modernist art, published this print.
